Satyarthi, who shared the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize with Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, is responsible for helping to free more than 87,000 children in India in partnership with his organization Bachpan Bachao Andolan, or Save the Childhood Movement.

He is encouraging college students to join his 100 Million Campaign, a movement to expose the system of child slavery that exists worldwide and help children to be free, safe and educated. Information is available at 100million.org.

Satyarthi will also speak to the public at PeaceJam's public address, "Free. Safe. Educated," at 7 p.m. Friday at the Thomas A. Kasdorf Auditorium located in Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo. A suggested donation of $15 per guest is requested. Tickets may be purchased at the door or online.

Additionally, a reception honoring Satyarthi will take place at 5:30 p.m., also at Loy Norrix High School. Tickets are $50 to attend the reception and will include hors d'oeuvres and refreshments, an opportunity to personally meet Satyarthi, and entry to the public address. Tickets must be purchased in advance online.

Born and raised in India, Satyarthi noticed at a young age that poorer families could not afford to send their children to school, and instead these children had to work for a living. It was at this age that he began his social activism to help other children be free from labor work and able to receive an education.

In 1980, he left his career as an electrical engineer and became the secretary general for the Bonded Labor Liberation Front, a nongovernmental organization working to end bonded labor in India. In that same year, Satyarthi founded the Bachpan Bachao Andolan, or Save Childhood Movement, whose aim is to create a society where all children are free from exclusion and exploitation and can receive a free education. Since its beginnings, BBA has helped to identify instances of child slavery, liberate these children, and work to rehabilitate and educate them.

The target audience will be youth, students and each individual of the state. This will help to build an informed society of youth, students and each individual of the state by participating in this online activity.

It was confirmed that majority of the industries were violating environmental compliance. You issued notice to all the industrial units to apply for fresh environmental clearance certificate from the competent authority. However, your action met with hostile response from a section of the industrial units, other vested interest persons and a section of the local politicians. The workers also became very hostile to you as they felt that your action would lead to the closure of these industrial units, and the resultant unemployment will lead to insecurity and uncertainty in their livelihood. Many owners of the industries approached you with the plea that you should not initiate harsh action as it would compel them to close their units, and cause huge financial loss, shortage of their products in the market. These would obviously add to the sufferings of the labourers and the consumers alike. The labour union also sent you representation requesting against the closure of the units, You simultaneously started receiving threats from unknown corners. You however received supports from some of your colleagues, who advised you to act freely to ensure environmental compliance. Local NGOs also came to your support and they demanded the closure of the polluting units immediately.

Establishment or creating of slums, it seems, appears to be good business and is well organized (Sardonic but flat tone). The number of slums has multiplied in the last few years by geometrical proportion (rising indignation). Large areas of public land, in this way, are usurped for private use free of cost (Raised eyebrows displaying Irritation). It is difficult to believe that this can happen in the capital of the country without passive or active connivance of the land owning agencies and/or the municipal authorities (hands raised with look of incredulity and rage) . The promise of free land, at the taxpayers cost, in place of a jhuggi, is a proposal which attracts more land grabbers. Rewarding an encroacher on public land with free alternate site is like giving a reward to a pickpocket (venom and spite mixed with sarcasm).

India is a multiparty, federal, parliamentary democracy with a bicameral parliament and a population of approximately 1.1 billion with an active civil society. Manmohan Singh became prime minister following his Congress Party-led coalition's victory in the 2004 general elections, which were considered free and fair, despite scattered instances of violence. Serious internal conflicts affected the states of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as several states in the north and east. While civilian authorities generally maintained effective control of the security forces, security forces occasionally acted independently of government authority during incidents of communal tensions in states such as Karnataka.

The Criminal Procedure Code provides that trials be conducted publicly, except in proceedings involving official secrets, trials in which statements prejudicial to the safety of the state might be made, or under provisions of special security legislation. Defendants are presumed innocent and can choose their counsel. Sentences must be announced publicly, and there are effective channels for appeal at most levels of the judicial system. The state provides free legal counsel to indigent defendants. The law allows defendants access to relevant government-held evidence in most civil and criminal cases; however, the government reserved the right to withhold information and did so in cases it considered sensitive.

The constitution provides for freedom of speech and expression; however, freedom of the press is not explicitly mentioned. The government generally respected these rights in practice. An independent press, an effective judiciary, and a functioning democratic political system combined to ensure freedom of speech and of the press. Under the 1923 Official Secrets Act, the government may prosecute any person who publishes or communicates information that could be harmful to the state. However, no such cases were reported during the year.

With the exception of radio, foreign media generally were allowed to operate freely. Private satellite television distributed widely provided competition for Doordarshan, the government-owned television network. While there were allegations that the government network manipulated the news, some privately owned satellite channels often promoted the platforms of political parties their owners supported. On September 19, the Union Indian Cabinet approved foreign news magazines to print local editions of their publications. Previously only scientific, technical, and specialty periodicals were allowed to be printed by foreign magazines.

The authorities generally allowed foreign journalists to travel freely, including in Jammu and Kashmir, where they regularly met with separatist leaders and filed reports on a range of issues, including government abuses.

Some attacks on the media were apparently intended to harass or inhibit the free expression of opinions. On January 20, Hindu Samrajay Sena members attacked the office of NDTV in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, to protest the television channel's broadcast in support of a state award for controversial painter M. F. Hussein.

On October 16, the Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) responded to the 2007 attack and torture of Naseer Ahmad Khora, a journalist and human rights activist, by directing the state administration to pay 70,000 rupees (approximately $1,489) in compensation. The SHRC noted that such acts pose a threat to the freedoms of press and expression. 350c69d7ab
